I wouldn't upgrade yet to Vista, I did and regretted it. I am now back on XP. The question about what camera, well I am a Nikon D300 owner and it's a fantastic camera. You might not want to spend that much and at the end of the day the glass is the important thing, 8 or 10 mp is not that important unless you want to have large poster prints. The D60 is out or will be I've not checked the price, if it's cheeper than the D80 then save some money for a fast standard lens.
