Damned if you do, damned if you don't. From what I have read journalists likely to be caught up in the extremes of human distress tend to become dispassionate. Much depends on the personality of the journalist I suppose.
My sister who was a journalist for a San Francisco tabloid grew tired of doing stories on yet another headless body found in a skip, and moved to a teaching post (in Turkey). But still makes a good living / lifestyle writing freelance.
