Let's say you are producing a leaflet or web page that has to feature a number of logos of supporting organisations/sponsors etc.

The logos may be different proportions e.g. some are tall and thin, some are short and wide.

How do you size the logos so it is fair? All the same height? same width? or varying sizes so they take up roughly the same space?

Personally speaking it would depend more on the design of the leaflet/webpage as some work better on the horizontal while others on a vertical approach. It may even work to have a 'corner' used to house the logo's.

What I try to do is focus on the main part of the logo and work around that size wise, then try to make them all look equally proportioned.

I've found it also depends on who/what its for, some of my clients in the past have had alot of societies etc so there was alot of logos, they gave me a list in "preference order" of who is most important, so i only had to make a certain amount of logos the same size and the rest could be smaller.

Personally I would never try to apply a mathematical formula to this. It's an art form.

Just try to give them all an equal prominence to the human eye. This can depend on a lot of factors, not just the height/width ratio of each logo (some logos are designed to be very eye-catching whereas some try to look subtle, and you have to compensate for this in the way you size them).

Keep playing around with the size of them all until there's no logo in particular which "leaps out" more than the rest. Get second opinions off other people.

I would place each logo in a small rectangle or square (which ever best suits the logo) and then just have each one the same height but with varying widths.

Ofcourse some of them may vary in height too, but having the logos placed within a small rectangle (pref white in colour, or outlined if on white background) gives each logo the same prominance on the page.
