Default Starting to Freelance

I am just starting to write articles that I hope to get published and would appreciate some information and advice. Firstly, how much should I expect to receive from articles that are around 1,200 words? What factors are there in how much I shall get? How do I know that I am submitting to a legitimate web site that will actually pay me? Is it best to stick with one web site? Can I submit the same article to a number of web sites? Finally, does anyone have any tips for academic writers transferring to a more journalistic style?

If anyone has any roles available, I am a PhD student with a focus upon philosophy, religion and politics. I would be interested in writing in any field to get things started. PM me if you wish.
