Default Investigative reporting

Hi everyone,
I am doing a project on undercover investigative reporting and how it aids the justice system. I'm studying programs such as "The Secret Policeman" (Mark Daly investigates racism in police training school) and was wondering what your opinions are of this type of journalism? Do you think that investigative journalism is necessary when there is so much going on in the world already to report on?

What are your opinions on this particular area of journalism?

Thanks for your time.

Sean

Sean,

An independent, persistent and thriving media in the UK is one of the great enablers of British justice. Tabloids get a lot of stick but they're just as important as broadsheets in uncovering hidden truths.

Saying that I'm not sure I agree ever time whether it's 'in the public interest' to sneak a disguised hack into Buck House or on a BA flight with some Silly Putty in his pocket, as some of the red-tops do every so often. However one wonders what backbench MPs and fat cat bosses would get up to if the media scrum, undercover or not, was absent or regulated.

The subject you raise is a fascinating one - and is the r'aison d'etre of the Paul Foot Awards. See below for info on Paul Foot and another courageous journo Mike Harrison.
Private Eye

From my understanding, it was a newspaper investigation that led to several British women accused of killing their babies being, rightfully, released. I think the journo/newspaper won an award for clearing these 'baby-killers.'

Lastly US undercover journos are also true masters at exposing sleaze, corporate wrongdoing etc so any serious paper addressing this subject should look across the pond before concluding on its role in serving the justice system.

Yeah!I was right! A good contact (JS) for you here:

Oh good Sean; I'm glad! When you've completed the paper or got feedback, do comeback and tell me how it went. Best of luck!!
