Hey everyone,
I'm about to enroll in a university soon (still in the midst of searching for a suitable one) and I'm stuck between the choice of pursuing a Major in Mass Communication or a major in Journalism. Several universities (i.e. Monash University) offers both courses and both seems to be equally appealing to me. I've been an internet journalist for over a year writing news stories and producing interviews in both text and video forms. My ultimate dream is to of course, start my own magazine That however, requires me to be equipped with business knowledge which I am uncertain if the journalism major offers such courses/programs. The following 2 URLS are links to Monash's website where it lists its respective courses' areas of study. 1275: Bachelor of Communication (Bachelor of Communication) 2396: Bachelor of Arts (Journalism) (Bachelor of Arts [Journalism]) Please advise!! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Cheers! |

I've just graduated from my BA International Jouranlism course. It was supposed to train students as "foreign correspondents"...didn't quite live upto that. I did do plenty of research on what is being taught. I even called a few times and mailed the course leader.
In all honesty, despite this, I still failed to see the shortcomings of the course. In your case. I suggest you should do what I failed to do. Find graduates from both courses and speak to them. find out if they have learnt much from the course and if they are able to enter the job market. Don't only go from the materail from the website. Sounds like i'm wearing a "tinfoil hat", but seriously, be a jouranlist a try to see from all the available angles. About starting a magazine. It isn't difficult at all. I've live in China for 2 years and during that time I met dozens of fellas who have started an English publication there. Sure, it was making some money, but the journalism was really poor quality, nothing to be proud about in the UK. I'm 23, in my opinion I would opt for the course that provides the best opportunity to refine your journalistic abilities. You can consider the other options later. Hope this helps in some way. |
