Default Applying for Jobs

I know it's not strictly freelance, but I'm hoping that somebody here can provide some insight.

I'm going to apply for a job as a staff writer on a magazine. However, in the process of applying, it asks you to state your 'salary expectations'. I'm just out of University and have never applied for 'real' jobs before, let alone ones that ask you to name your salary!

Is there any sort of tactic to this? If you go too low will you risk underselling yourself if you're offered the job, and if you go too high will you come across as arrogant and overvalueing yourself, thereby risking your chances?

Does anyone know what average salaries are for staff writers in the UK?

If anyone could help, it'd be fantastic. Thanks.
