How I made my first sale.
I phoned up the editor of a daily paper to sell him an idea. "Great idea," he said. "I'll pay you a fee for the idea and get my stringer for your area to write it up." Cool! A sale! Fifteen minutes later he 'phoned back. There had, it transpired, been a bit of a hitch. His stringer was on a course. Could I interview the key players in the story I had sold them? My head was saying no, but my mouth said: "Yes, of course I can!" In your position I would suggest you either phone up and ask to chat with the editor or drop him a concise letter with an SAE and your phone number. As for asking him to complete/sign an NDA, well, you could, but that might be a little like adding a note saying: "I think you are a cheating robdog". My editor, if someone sent him an NDA, would not bother to sign it. Or accept the article. It's about trust in the industry. Yes, you can get ripped off, but not as often as you might fear. |
