Default nikon d80 question

hi all.

i lost all my camera gear when my farm burnt down a while back and have been chomping at the bit to get my mitts on a dslr again. i used to have the olympus e500, but since then its changed to the e510 i think it is. anyways i have been looking at the nikon d80 and have been wondering what the general consensus is, if any of you perhaps use it. the olympus was an 8mp dslr and the nikon is at 10mp. does it make much of a difference to the quality in the photos or is it negligible. have there been any problems in using it with windows vista etc, although i am using windows xp at the mo, i was contemplating an upgrade.

any comments on the matter will be appreciated. thanks in advance

I wouldn't upgrade yet to Vista, I did and regretted it. I am now back on XP. The question about what camera, well I am a Nikon D300 owner and it's a fantastic camera. You might not want to spend that much and at the end of the day the glass is the important thing, 8 or 10 mp is not that important unless you want to have large poster prints. The D60 is out or will be I've not checked the price, if it's cheeper than the D80 then save some money for a fast standard lens.

Hope this helps.

thanks for the tip dave ... hadnt thought about that.... will certainly keep it in mind. however i will be involved in a aids awarness day at the end of the year. a mate of mine works for a museum and has asked me to do the photography for their display they will have on the aids awareness day thing, and i know that some of the prints have to be at least A1 size or A0....cant remember which is bigger off hand.....would the nikon d60 be up to the task??

Cant speak about the use of it with vista or xp but the mega pixels dont make much of a difference (or atleast not on a dslr where the difference is of about 2mp). Its more to do with the lenses your armed with.

Have you thought about canon? Im a canon 350d, you can oick these up fairly cheaply now as they have been replaced by the 400d - a 450d is due to be released in march too. As for lenses you really want a wide range I'de have though, I have the kit lense (18-55mm) and a 70-300mm sigma.

All in all for my canon 350d and two lenses I recon Ive spent about £550 (my sigma lense was second hand) so for about £500 quid or a bit less if you shop around ou could get yourself a decent kit.
