Hi Guys,
I have recently been given a photography job and they have asked me to sign a contract. It is not very long and is basically one paragraph. I wasn't sure if I should ask them to add that the Copyright for the images remains with me as the photographer? It all reads rather strangely to me! Would be good to hear your views.... The agreed price of £60.00 includes the photography fee, set up costs, cost of lighting, film cost and film processing. The photographer grants the [organisation name] unlimited license of use for all of the images taken. Images will be used in Press and Marketing promotional literature such as leaflets and flyers and also be used to promote the [organisation name] in all forms of media: national and international print publications, broadcast media and electronic media. Where possible when images are used, the photographer will always be credited. Cheers Clarity |

Absolutely! You should be retaining copyright of your work but I have to point out that I'm more worried about how much you're charging for your work. Obviously I've no idea what the shoot involves but I wouldn't even take a camera out of a bag for that kind of money. I can't help but feel that you are being taken advantage of to the nth degree!
take a look here for an idea of what you should be charging

Now thats either a typo or your charging pennies!
i have worked in video for a while and a for a video used for promotion/marketing would cost you upwards of £2000 for every 2 minutes of finished film. - maybe more if 3d stuff is needed etc. so for stills i would say at least £200 per day, anf then 50-100 for each photo. Forget the 60 its not worth it!!! |

I'm an aspiring photographer just building my skills and my opinion even from where im at is that you should not be handing over the rights of you work for sixty pounds, its just not worth it! Especially if that price should cover the expenses you have mentioned, lighting etc.
In fact I think that getting any money out of "the named organization" after the sixty pounds is handed over does not look to promising from the wording of the contractual agreement which states that you the photographer allow unlimited use of the images. Get my point? Last edited by M.F.fotoshop; 07-23-2007 at 02:50 PM. |
