Default Should I ask for money?

Hi,

I recently photographed a gig at a local venue, with the intention being to get some practice with a new lens and in low light before ideally going on to get some paid work when I have enough to show. This was only the second gig I've shot but the pictures turned out better than expected and the bands are impressed.

One of the bands has been asked to provide high res photos by the organisers of a festival they are booked to play, and they in turn have asked me to send them the high res images I have. The trouble is I'm a little lost as to what to do next as I'm very new to this. My question is, what should I do? Charge the band? Just get photo credit? Something else?

Any advice would be much apreciated.

Dave

My advice would be to offer them for free but still ensure that they are credited as your work and that they sign a contract agreeing that the pictures are only going to be used for this festival organiser.

Unfortunately even after all this if they still wanted to reproduce them there's not much you could do unless you found out; but it would give a professional credible image.

Also if it's only the second gig that you've shot then building your portfolio and getting your name known on the scene are surely more important than the fee you might receive for the picture.

Just my two pence worth though.

Good luck.

Nathaniel.

Nathaniel is right, the best thing to do is allow them to have them for free but ensure you get full credit for them and ensure you use the experience to build a relationship with the band and the venues (the one the photos are from and the new venue)

This will then allow you to build a 2nd, 3rd, 4th job and so on with the band or the venues and will get your name and more importantly, your shots out there in the public domain.
