I am having some problems when I am taking shots with the sky as a background, particularly if the subject is backed by half trees and half sky then the half backed by the sky is oof.

Please can someone advise me what I need to do to maintain focus on the subject?

Set focus manually or auto focus using an AF sensor on the subject you want in focus.
