I have been offered freelance creative work for a communication agency that I was working for in Paris last year. I'd like to know whether I can invoice this work in the same way as I would within the UK, or are there special rules to follow regarding VAT etc?

Are you actually going to be living in France while you do the work - self employment in France can be offputting due to social charges. If you do live in France, for freelancing or contracts , it can be much less risky and less stressful to work through a portage (i work through Challenge & Co Portage - an alternative to self employment in France in English !) which basically allows you to act like a freelancer, but pay any social charges PAYE (ie there is no risk and you dont have to register as self employed). If the head office of the company you are doing the work for is in France, even if it's a small co, you will need to charge them the French equiv' of VAT if you live in France.

Hi
I maybe wrong, if you live in England and work in England, you pay your taxes in England, I cant see a problem with you invoicing a French client in any different way that you would invoice a British client. I think its more the way that they are going to pay you, and whether you are invoicing in Euros or Sterling. How are they going to pay, by transfer or by cheque, if Euro cheque, could be charges at the bank for this to clear I work through Challenge and Co, because I live in France. You could try contacting them, as they will know. But I cant see a problem if you live in England to just invoice them, not sure on the VAT side of things though. Hope that helps Kind regards Kate |
