Advice on copyright buyout rates

Hi,

My husband has recently started doing freelance illustrating part time, alongside his full time job. As his free time is limited I said I would help him out with some research so that he can get on with his drawing.

A client has asked him to create a character to be used on merchandise and on a website. The client also wants to own full copyright. My husband has no idea how much to charge for the copyright, any suggestions?

My husband is new to the industry. The client is a new start up company.

Any advice at all would be very much appreciated. I have been searching a lot and going round in circles, please help me!
