Hi, i'm writing & illustrating a childrens book - I think i should refrain from putting my art illustrations on facebook, as i hope to get them published into a book once i've finished. I presume publishing companies would have a policy against using work that had previously been put online. What are your thoughts? Big thanks, Naomi.
To be honest, I wouldn't put anything of value on Facebook. I don't know if publishing companies would have a problem with that, but I would definitely refrain from posting anything of my own on the web, cause you can never properly protect it. Why do you want to upload them on Facebook? And do you mean before or after print?
The only time I'd put anything on Facebook is to market the final thing and only then, not the entire image to prevent IP abuse. By all means use snippets and thumbnails to spread awareness, other than that, ask yourself why you'd want to give away your hard work.
Will your content be on your personal fb page or on your 'business fb page'? Thing is, it is a lot easier for people to copy/paste your content on facebook then on a webpage where you can refrain people doing that (don't know how, but you can). You can also put on a website that the images are copyright. But might be worth while to talk with your publisher to see what their policies are and maybe a UK copyright/IP agency.
I would do crops of the images, but I would be hesitant to post any full-sized images. Even with copyrights and watermarks you are still going to get people stealing them. You can however limit the privacy settings of a photo. I did this when I wanted to show my mom pictures of the new apartment, but not everyone else. I just amped up the privacy settings on the photos so she was the only one that had access to them.
Yes you are right, facebook posts can easily be stolen by other people. SO if you let only some hints of your work it will trigger more intere
