Illustration Payment methods

Hi All,

I am looking for Greeting Card illustrations and wondered if it is generally acceptable to pay per unit printed rather than up front fee for print rights?

I need large volumes and would prefer to pay more over a year or so rather than a lump sum payment up front.

Your views on this would be appreciated.
