Hi, I've been a staff copywriter for about six years, and have recently set-up as freelancer, attracting enough work to keep me busy part-time. However, I don't have any professional qualifications, aside from a BA in English Lit, which of course doesn't offer any practical experience. I know of the Institue of Copywriting Diploma, but am not sure whether to book it as a) it's £500 and b) I don't know if this will help generate any work. I'd be very grateful for anyone's advice on this. Many thanks, Binkle.
Hello I think industry experience and a good portfolio is more important to most clients than a course. Sarah
I've completed the Diploma in Plain English through the Plain English Campaign which was very much worth it because it's a recognised organisation. I agree that you portfolio is more important than anything else.
Hi, I have almost completed this course. I knew very little about Copywriting before I started the course, so it has been very beneficial to me so far. However, if you are already a confident Copywriter, then I don't think it would be that beneficial. I definitely think a good portfolio or experience is far more valuable.
Diploma Hi there Have you decided what to do yet? I too have successfully completed the Institute of Copywriting Diploma. (With distinction) I found it extremely useful - no more so than the advice offered by my personal tutor, who has become a friend and work colleague. The course also allowed me to build up a comprehensive portfolio - which every copywriter needs to promote their skills. Oh, and plenty of writing opportunities flooded in from the Institute while I was doing the course... So, if you are worried about whether it's worth doing, I wouldn't be concerned on that score. One thing I would say, the Diploma is another string to a copywriter's bow. Should anyone ask you to prove yourself - and it does happen - you would be able to say you have a qualification, years of experience and a portfolio teeming with copy examples. By the way, the Diploma course itself has recently been re-written to encompass new Internet marketing techniques. And, it's doubled in size! I'd consider it very good value for money now! If you want to have a chat about it, feel free to get in touch, OK? Happy to have a natter! Nikki
Yeah i agree industry experience and clients feedback is the most important factors you should care about.
Hi there - I did their Copywriting Diploma around 6 years ago now, and I thought it was invaluable. The personal tutor was excellent and gave constructive, honest advice, and was extremely encouraging. He was a PR professional in a high profile agency, so I really felt I was receiving expert advice. Whether you are in a pr/communications role already, or plan to start up freelance, it's a real confidence boost to know that you have covered every aspect of potential work. I couldn't recommend it highly enough. I plan to move into freelance work once my youngest starts school, and I know I can look back on the notes as a refresher. Hope that helps! I'd also think about the Plain English course - it indicates that you are able to write concisely without the need for fluff!
For sure, with due to the amount of freelancing work available online, one can surely gain a diploma can help you gaining a lot worth in this field of writing content for a website.
