I'm writing an piece for my university course on whether the Inverted Pyramid is still relevant in journalism today.
Any comments posted from those who know the trade will be much appreciated! Thank you!

In most contexts, certainly! Whilst the importance of the inverted pyramid is no doubt lessened by the introduction of web content (and thus more space to play with per story) it still plays an important part in journalistic practice.

Perhaps it plays even more importance in some circumstances - consider a 140 character tweet the top of the inverted pyramid - a modern day equivalent of the opening gambit in a newspaper article?

Sounds like an interesting piece, anyway - good luck!

Certainly as a foundation stone but, as SB says, less so when writing for the web. That said, with more eyes than ever potentially up for grabs and with more content rivals than ever before, that initial impact paragraph is more important than ever. So short and sharp (akin to the nose of pyramid) it has to be!
