Design brief:

Company name: XL Pro Audio
The company hires, sells, installs and repairs DJ and Pro Audio kit
website is to be XL Pro Audio - Home (cheezy template in place at the moment!)
Leave space or put in a random address/contact details etc

I do corporate gigs and club nights

Post them up here and watermark your image. The winning design gets £50 in return for a unwatermarked high res psd.

Oh dear, my first ever post on this forum is a negative one. Ah well, I see this kinda thing on design forums everywhere and it makes me angry. Essentially you are getting people to complete a job that they should be earning more than double what you're offering for, without even knowing whether they'll end up getting paid.

Sorry for making my debut in such a negative fashion, but hello everyone anyway!

Yes, have seen this kind of thing a few times myself too. Only the newbies tend to be taken in by this one :rollin

£50 is two hours work - that is if you win. A nice design can easily be copied by someone with a bit of nous too.

 

Sorry, i'm not a designer although I have done some design in college.
£50 is what I am prepared to pay. Im not going to steal anyones designs which is why I ask that they are watermarked.
I do however realise that this industry is full of people trying to get ther foot in the door/ expand their portfolio, and maybe I am exploiting that fact but at the end of the day my company is just starting out and I have a limited buget. I know there will be people out there who are happy to work for that price.
I know people who work in the media,journo,film and design industries who apply for jobs at companies for trainee wages of pittence sometimes even for free.

Everyone has a price, if the pay is not to your taste then you only have to click the back button on your browser.

I never originally intended to post this on a design forum I posted it on a music forum where I post quite regularly. I just thought i'd try on here where I know most of you are designers.

Scarlet, can I just ask you to think back to a time when you were just starting out. Was your first job at the going rate (however much that is, im not sure) or did you do work for free, £20 here and there. I very much doubt your first few contracts were at the market rate.

 

xlogic, I am just starting out as a professional designer, but I still expect to be paid a reasonable rate. The problem I have is not so much with the amount you are offering, but with the idea that you want people to produce work for you without the guarantee of being comissioned to see the piece through to completion. I was messed around by my first couple of freelance clients and I'm just trying to protect people who might be as impressionable as I was. That said, if people are happy to work under those conditions then that is up to them.

 

Fair play - I obvoiusly do not understand the ins and outs of the quoting and samples used in this industry. I just figured this would be a good way for me to have a plethora of designs to choose from to be sure I got one I was happy with.

Maybe it would be more acceptable for people to draw up rough concepts rather than finished designs and then if I was happy with a style/concept we could enter into a contract.

 

Sounds like a plan. It really isn't my place to tell you what to do though. I was just voicing an opinion from the safety of my laptop

I'm sure you'll get some interest from students and stuff

 

It's a perfectly valid post, but one likely to raise eyebrows......I'm fine with it.
There was no attempt to confuse or rip anyone off, and if one's willing to submit work under honest and up-front conditions, I think it's commendable in some ways.

There is a ready market of unemployed artists and all they need [sometimes] is a foot in the door.........we all started somewhere.

3 designs!
