Hi there, What are people's general views on proof-reading rates? I'm expecting a variety of replies, but the situation is this: A friend of mine has asked me to proof-read the copy for his website and is more than willing to pay me for doing so. Now, obviously as it's a friend (and my first job) I'll be more than reasonable on rates, but at the same time I have no prices to reference. I know there is the choice of hourly rates versus one off charges, but what would be a reasonable amount to charge in either situation? The website is about 15 pages in all, if that helps. By the way, I am looking at the potential for me to taking on copywriting/proof-reading as a business, but as this is a friend and (more importantly), my first job as a proofer...well, you understand. Thanks, K:confused2
Okay, for anyone wondering, I found this link from the Society for Editors and Proofreaders which helps: SfEP suggested minimum freelance rates - Society for Editors and Proofreaders Moire generally, there's a (2009) guide to fees from the NUJ at: Freelance Fees Guide: Welcome Still, I might have to cut those for a friend. As a further point - for the moderators - would it be worth putting Proofreading in a separate sub-forum? Journalism and Copywriting don't seem to cover it. Cheers
Thanks for the votes for this, have asked the team to add Editors and Proofreaders into this category. Not all the categories are as busy as we'd like them to be, so I hope this slight change makes everyone feel welcome.
Thanks for the link... Editors & Proofreaders corner would be nice. Also one for translators please, because there are many freelance translators out there! Keep up the good work!
