I'm pretty new to freelance illustration, and I'm currently working on a children's book that I believe is being self-published by the author. I was just wondering if illustrators usually receive royalties (about 5%) from books such as this? Thanks for any help!
Hi, To be honest, I think its down to the designer and book seller to work out. This would be needed to be worked out at the start of the process before any work is complete or your get to invested in the project. But to be honest Royalties are not something I would go for as you have no idea if you are going ripped off or not. Plus how offend are they going to get paid out and how do they prove the sales. I bet you have to chase them as well. But that is just my two cents worth!
Thank you for your reply! I am currently writing up a contract so we can make some sort of arrangement before I send over any completed illustrations, but judging by what you've suggested, perhaps I'll reconsider mentioning royalties. Thanks again
