I'm looking for some advice. I havent got a clue on how to start a website so i'm looking for a site where i can create one with a .co.uk and have a decent portfolio of fairly low res images to stop people taking without consent. Any advice would be great as I feel this is a must for me to move on and up. Thanks
Hello Richard, I know quite a few photographers that use a Flickr account as their portfolio. You probably already have a Flickr account if you are into photography. As regards a domain name, you could register a suitable .co.uk domain and set it to forward to your Flickr account. That would be a possible step forward... All the best John
that would probably work for me, can you set flickr images to low res or do you just upload them as low res and also do you know of any domain sites where you can transfer the domain out easily. Thanks for the help
Hi Richard, You could just load up images with the resolution you want. Would suggest you load some up and have a play around with the various options. As for domains, once it is registered with - say, GoDaddy, Simplynames are the big boys (but lots of others) - you will have access to a Control Panel where you can designate a forwarding web address. This feature is included in the registration. For example, your domain e.g. rickspics.co.uk would forward to your flickr web address. All the best John
Clikpic? Have you tried this lot? You can also buy your domain name through them and they offer a range of templates. It is also possible to get a non CP site designed by external designers. Rgds Matt
If you are looking for a pace to register .co.uk domain and get webhosting..then you can surely check www.webhost.uk.net I have using them for a year now and works great for me.
Hi My advice would be dependent upon what your objectives are. You've had some good advice already on where to get started and many people take the template route initially - some remain with it as it delivers what they're looking for. Search Engine Optimisation is the black art of trying to get your site onto the first page of Google for your chosen keywords - in my case Commercial Photography and Architectural Photography. You can achieve a lot by researching SEO and picking up tips from web experts so that your template based site starts to rank better. Beware of the numerous offers from companies guaranteeing that they can get your site onto the first page on Google - keep your money in your pocket - they won't have any sustained effect on your site. SEO can be achieved by determination and a desire to absorb loads of small tips that together add up to a real difference in how your site starts to rank. It can take a while for Google to rank your site properly - don't expect fast results. If you're dependent on your site to showcase your photography business then my view is that a custom built site is the best long term option - preferably with a content management interface so that you can make daily changes etc. Good luck Adam Adam Coupe Photography
